Clerk to the Surveyor of St Paul’s Cathedral and Heritage Consultant
Caroline is an experienced heritage management professional and Heritage Consultant with particular strengths in research, analysis, writing and conservation planning. Caroline completed her MSc in Historic Conservation at Oxford Brookes University in 2018 and has an MA in Gallery Studies from the University of Essex.
At Caroe Architecture, Caroline is Clerk to the Surveyor of St Paul’s Cathedral, supporting a wide range of fabric conservation and development projects by, for example, researching and crafting statements of significance and need, and heritage impact assessments for Care of Cathedrals Measure and planning applications to the Fabric Advisory Committee/Cathedrals Fabric Commission for England, and the local planning authority. As part of her wider Heritage Consultancy role, Caroline has collaborated with author and architectural historian Jeremy Musson and other expert contributors to research, write and lead consultation on Conservation Management Plans for the National Trust at Grade I listed Chartwell, Red House and Oxburgh Hall and a National Heritage Lottery funded Conservation Plan for Grade I listed Bevis Marks Synagogue in the City of London. Caroline has also researched and written Heritage Statements, Statements of Significance and Heritage Impact Assessments for a range of historic property owners to accompany successful planning, Listed Building Consent and Scheduled Monument Consent applications; and is adept at assessing and describing the impact of proposed developments by others on the views and settings of heritage assets.
Caroline has a strong practical understanding of managing historic buildings. Prior to joining Caroe Architecture in 2014 Caroline enjoyed a career with the National Trust holding posts including House Manager at Clandon Park, Surrey, and House Steward at Standen, West Sussex. These roles included responsibility for operational management and strategic planning, interpretation, preventive conservation, collections management, and buildings management and conservation.
