BA(Hons) Dip Arch Cantab RIBA AABC
Oliver is one of the country’s foremost ecclesiastical architects, but his work and experience spans many sectors. Residential projects, pure conservation and major commercial refurbishments are part of his repertoire, with particular emphasis on the sustainability of existing and historic buildings. Architecture runs in Oliver’s veins: his great-grandfather was W. D. Caroe and his father was Martin Caroe, renowned architects, both.
As an AABC-accredited specialist in conservation, Oliver has particular expertise in conserving, repairing and improving churches, from the medieval through to the Victorian. His track record is equally strong as a designer of new buildings, from small residential projects to the more complex educational settings of Oxford and Cambridge Universities.
He was appointed as architect to Ripon Cathedral in 2010, where he has led several significant projects. These include the design and installation of a major new Narthex porch, scheduling and specifying a programme of phased stonework repairs, delivering the quinquennial inspection, and a long-term masterplan.
Since 2012 Oliver has also been the Surveyor of the Fabric to St Paul’s Cathedral. In addition to the constant process of cleaning, repair and renewal, he has overseen numerous projects, ranging from repairs to the stairs and passages around the ascent of the Dome, re-presenting the Crypt facilities, and working alongside the Collections team to discover the extensive collections, archives and the magnificent Wren Library on the Triforium level, with the aim of opening it up as an exhibition area to visitors.
Oliver’s other major projects include: the conservation of Kirkstall Abbey; the refurbishment of offices for the House of Lords; and work on the Archives Centre and the School of Pythagoras at St John’s College, Cambridge.
Oliver is also an Associate of Cambridge Architectural Research Ltd, an independent consultancy providing specialist advice for the construction industry, design professions and policy-making institutions. Founded in 1987 and covering all aspects of the built environment, CAR has established itself at the forefront of interdisciplinary consultancy.
