On Thursday 22nd June 2017, Beth Watson of Caroe Architecture Ltd will be speaking at an event organised by the SPAB in connection with the London Festival of Architecture at St Botolph Without Church Hall, Bishopsgate, London EC2M 3TL.

Beth, who was awarded equal first place in the SPAB’s 2016 Philip Webb Award, will talk about her winning Cambridge University scheme at this evening event. The proposals for the recovery of the earthquake-damaged Italian town of L’Aquila explore how memory (of people, places and activities) can inspire the revitalisation of historic places for new uses. The importance of memory and the layers of history at sites like these was a powerful thread running through the year’s Webb Award entries. Judge Ptolemy Dean will introduce the event with a perspective on the 2016 competition and the significance of memory in the SPAB’s approach to old buildings.

The event will include the presentation of Philip Webb Award 2016 winners’ certificates and an informal drinks reception.
