In his role as Surveyor to the Fabric of St Paul’s Cathedral, Oliver has overseen the installation of new video artwork by Bill Viola in 2014 and in 2016.
The new piece, entitled Mary is situated in the North Quire Aisle as a pendant piece to Martyrs, installed earlier on the South side of the Quire. This work features scenes from the life of Mary, including an incredibly powerful pieta and it is the long awaited culmination of an exciting collaborative project with the artist and Tate to create two pieces designed specifically for permanent display at St Paul’s. Designed by Foster + Partners, the elegant steel stands and armatures that hold the video screens are of the highest specification and precision pieces of engineering; forming an important and integral part of both works of art. With Oliver’s guidance and in depth knowledge of the project and the Cathedral site, Hampshire based Engineering & Developments Ltd (EDL) rose admirably to the challenge of producing the metalwork for Mary.
